COLOUR
"COLOUR"

Ask a random girl on the street about her favourite colour and she'll proudly say BLACK.
Ask a older person how they like their tea and they'll say strong and BROWN like your beautiful eyes.
Ask a kid about their favourite ice cream flavour and most of them will cheerfully gulp at the sound of CHOCOLATE.
But ask a person what makes you beautiful and they'll say just a little bit more WHITE.
Ask a boy who's the most beautiful creature he has seen and he'll point at a snow white.
Ask a girl who she envies the most and she replies the one who could put the colour of milk to shame at night.
Ever since we were little, we were conditioned to think that your skin colour defines your beauty, that the way you look on paper matters more than what you write on a piece of paper. And this is not something that is gender specific, you could be a male, you could be a female or a non binary person, and you can still go through the rigorous norms of our society.
Yesterday somebody told me a story, about a really brilliant woman who owned and chaired a multi million dollar company but if you looked at her she doesn't look good because she is too dark. A boy was ridiculed because he was dark and his wife was milky white. A girl was chosen on the team because she was more easy on the eyes and a great approach to distract people. They didn't win because the girl didn't have the smarts to put in the efforts. And it wasn't her fault, because she was never trained in the first place because everybody assumed her to be a pretty tag along. The marriage worked because they both had love for each other beyond the beauty standards of the society. The company thrived because she had the wit and smarts to lead.
It worked because take away the color, take away the makeup, if you're confident about who you are and what you do, nobody can match you. And they had that confidence, to tear through the society, to fight for what they believe is rightfully theirs and grab it and make a place for themselves.
But how do WE do it?
Breaking out of these insecurities that has been bestowed upon us since centuries of being not good enough, of being not pretty enough, of being not white enough, is hard and will probably take time. I want you to wake up and look in the mirror everyday and tell yourself"you are good enough, I am not defined by the race of skin, or the gender of my body, I am defined by the deeds I do and will do, I am defined by the things that I love and will continue to look e or will probably fall in love with. I cannot change who I am, I can only change what I can do and today I will do myself good"
And also remember,
We all have our preferences about who we fall for and who we consider as beautiful. you can prefer chicken to paneer and still think paneer is good too. After all, we all are human and words that you speak are stronger than sticks and stones.
Sincerely yours,
Gayatri
